FAQ

  • Does it hurt?
Yes, it does. Pain is relative to every individual and varies depending on the body part you chose to get tattooed. If you have never experienced getting tattooed, there is one way to find out. If you consider yourself on the least pain tolerant side, no worries, the tattoo sessions will be tailored to each and everybody's capabilities and needs. My only goal is to make your experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
  • Hygiene?
I take hygiene very seriously. The understanding of hygiene standards is one of my priorities from the moment we step in my workplace. At my studio in The Hague, I take the rules and regulations provided by the health department (GGD) to heart. I ensure that everything is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each session and client and I can provide a care free environment where you can feel safe getting tattooed. I use only the top of the line products, clean, sterilized equipment for each client. Check on www.veiligtatoeerenenpiercen.nl that the studio where you want to get a tattoo has a permit. This permit indicates that the studio works according to the hygiene guidelines of the National Center for Hygiene and Safety.
  • How do I book an appointment\consultation?
Convinced? Not convinced? Have a lot of questions? Do I need an appointment, a consultation? Just fill in the form on my "Bookings" page. I will respond accordingly to each request doesn't matter where you are in the process of envisioning your next tattoo. I usually set up a consultation appointment prior to the tattooing appointment where we can discuss and get a better understanding of what your project involves and discuss your ideas, placement, size, complexity and everything else regarding a future appointment.
  • Can I bring friends and/or family with me?
Of course. A new tattoo can be a very exciting and I understand that you would like to share the experience with a good friend or a loved one. Though... Tattooing is a very delicate process that requires focus and concentration. Because we I want to deliver the best result, I kindly ask that you come accompanied by no more than one person. A calm, leveled atmosphere where I can do my work is very important for the outcome of your tattoo.
  • Can I cancel my appointment?
Of course. If you have to postpone or reschedule your appointment, please let me know as soon as possible of the change in your availability. You can do this by getting in contact through the established channel of communication. I expect a minimum of at least 48h before notice before the appointment should take place. I value and approach my appointments and clients with a great deal of respect. I would greatly appreciate the same attitude in return. Thank you.
  • In what situation would I not be able to get tattooed?
A new tattoo, especially a session consisting a few or more hours will put a strain on your body. To ensure your comfort and proper healing post session I can only tattoo you if in a good state of health and if the appropriate aftercare instructions can be respected. You can not get tattooed 3 - 4 week prior to a sunny vacation. Sun bathing is very damaging to a tattooed area that hasn't had enough time to regenerate. Even though healed, the area of the skin that was damaged is very sensitive and can not provide the proper protection against the intense UV rays. This will be equally damaging to you new tattoo as it is for your body. Even though swimming would be possible just after the area is fully healed, this could be as early as 7 - 10 days after the tattooing session, if swimming would be accompanied by direct sun exposure we advise you abstain from exposing the tattoo to such an environment. The sun exposure in water can be even more damaging than sun bathing because of how the light reflects of the surface of the water. You can not get tattooed if you follow an antibiotics treatment. The antibiotics treatment should be completed at least 3-5 days before the tattoo session. You can not get tattooed if you follow a cortisone treatment. You can not get tattooed if the desired area shows signs of eczema(atopic dermatitis) or any other kind of rash or skin condition. You can not get tattooed if you're pregnant. New moms should have weaned before considering a new tattoo.
  • Do I tattoo fingers and/or hands?
I highly advise agains finger tattoos. It is very important to understand that a finger tattoo will never look so delicate and sharp as mostly any other tattooable area on the body. A new tattoo on the fingers and around the palm will look good, but after the tattoo is healed the outcome can be drastically different than any other tattoo on your body. There are instances where the tattoo partially or completely fades away leaving the area looking "dirty" and inconsistent with other tattoos you might have. Hand tattoos are less problematic than the fingers but still one of the most difficult when it comes to healing and maintaining consistency and saturation. Our hands being the main "tool" we interact with our surroundings, the healing of any wound on our hands takes a lot longer and is more prone to damage and infections from our daily activities and chores. It is especially difficult for someone engaged in physical work in less clean environments. A hand tattoo or finger tattoo should not be one of your first tattoos. It is important to understand that it is a very difficult are to care for and maintain. It is important you already have experience with the healing process.
  • Do we tattoo the neck and/or face?
Yes I do. But... A tattoo on the neck or face will drastically change your appearance. Such a decision should not be take lightly. The neck/face area should not be one of your first tattoos. It should be one of the tattoos that you take the most consideration for. It is a very painful area and difficult to care for and maintain. Only a person that has enough experience with the tattooing process should even consider these areas.
  • What are the costs of getting tattooed?
The price for a tattoo can vary greatly depending on the size, complexity, placement, challenge that the skin and the client pose. Because of the complexity of tailoring a design for a specific area and person I can only give an estimation about the costs once the design is discussed and agreed upon during a consultation appointment. The starting price for any tattoo is 100e. This base price is established considering the base material expense for making your tattoo possible. Assembly and dismantling of the necessary tattoo equipment, cleaning, preparing of the station, sterile materials and consulting, components necessary to any tattoo session irrelevant of the size and complexity of the design.
  • How old do I have to be to get tattooed?
The minimum age to get tattooed is 18 years old. According to the Dutch law, anybody older the 16 years old can get tattooed if accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian. Even though legal, I will consider this request very seriously depending on design and placement of the tattoo. I strongly discourage tattoos for people under 18 since your body is still developing and there are real concerns that the tattoo might go through some serious changes until the body fully develops. A bad choice in a tattoo at a young age can turn out to be a regretful decision later on. Selecting a design and placement at this age without understanding the repercussions can very easily became something that might not appeal to an older self. If requested I can hopefully help steer a decision towards a more favorable outcome in the future. I will not tattoo for people under 16 years of age.
  • How do I take care of my new tattoo?
Tattooing causes injury that disrupts the integrity of the skin and provides an entry point for microorganisms. A freshly made tat- too, applied under hygienic conditions to clean and healthy skin, can be considered a simple superficial wound. Good aftercare promotes rapid wound healing and reduces the risk of infections. All aftercare treatments should be performed with clean hands or with gloves on. In general, touching the tattoo should be minimized and hands should be washed before touching the tattoo. 1. At the end of your tattoo session, the tattooed area will be covered with a clean gauze or clinging film. This is a temporary measure to protect the wound while you are on your way home. You will remove the plastic film after 2 to 3 hours and start the aftercare treatment. 2. Wash the tattoo gently, only with clean hands, cold or lukewarm water and a mild hypoallergenic soap. Repeat throughout the day (how many times it’s needed), for the next 3 to 4 days, each time the surface of the tattooed area shows signs of seeping bodily fluids in the form of little drop- lets or a mucus like fluid. 3. Rinse soap thoroughly. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or paper towel, or let the tattoo air dry. Do not wipe or rub dry. 4.Apply a thin layer of hypoallergenic aftercare ointment. Repeat throughout the day each time the surface of the tattooed area shows signs of dryness. It is very important that the tattooed area has a thin layer of ointment protecting it and keeping the skin moist throughout the day. As many times as needed! 5. Only cover the tattoo again with a new non-adhesive bandage or plastic wrap in case of need, a few hours at a time. This process can be repeated for a maximum of 3-4 days after the tattoo has been applied. As soon as the skin starts to scab, DO NOT apply any bandage or plastic film to the area. A wound that is treated for without covering it or bandaging it will heal a lot faster and smoother. 6.4-5 days after the tattoo session, the skin damaged during the tattooing process will start to come off. This is a perfectly natural process that your body will go through healing after such a wound. You will notice small to medium flakes coming off the skin while applying the ointment during this time. The flakes should be the same colour as the tattooed ares they are coming off. 7. Keep applying the hypoallergenic aftercare ointment 3-4 times a day, as a thin layer, until the scabs are completely gone. You should apply ointment over the area only when the skin is getting dry. The process should not be carried out for more than 10 to 14 days (depending on the healing pace) after the application of the tattoo (in case the healing process goes smoothly). Using the ointment for a prolonged period period of time, especially if the ointment is fatty, can lead in certain instances to skin irritation, light inflammation from oversaturation from using the thick ointment. 8. When the scab has completely disappeared and the healed tattoo skin looks healthy, a fragrance-free moisturizing lotion can be applied several times a day to prevent the tattoo from drying out. Beware and make sure you understand if your skin needs and can handle such a treatment. Some types of skin prefer a period of rest after the ointment treatment applied as aftercare following the tattooing session. 9. 10-14 days after the tattooing session you can consider, in case the healing process went smooth, that the tattoo is fully healed. Your skin on the other hand will take longer time to fully recover. This will happen over time, depending on the type of skin and seasons, up to 3 to 6 months. Your skin will probably still feel sensitive to certain activities or clothing and fashion accessories for the first to second month following the tattooing session. Use common sense and keep an eye out on how this process is going and manage the sensitive areas. In case of doubt about any of the points above, please contact your tattoo artist and ask for further explanations.
  • What activities to avoid during the recovery period?
Avoid bathing, swimming and sauna use until the tattoo has completely healed. Showering is recommended, it is very important to maintain proper hygiene when dealing with an open wound. Avoid sun exposure and artificial tanning (tanning beds) for at least two months to avoid the risk of abnormal pigmentation. If sun exposure cannot be avoided, high protection sunscreens can be used, but only on a fully healed tattoo. However, the protection they provide is limited. An incompletely healed tattoo should not be exposed to direct sunlight and, if exposure cannot be avoided, should be covered. Sunscreens should only be used on fully healed tattoos. Clothing worn during the recovery period that comes into contact with a newly applied tattoo should be clean and the material should be soft on the skin, preferably an organic fabric. Do not remove scabs or loose skin during the recovery period and avoid scratching. Skin disinfectants (antiseptic) can interfere with the healing process. Antibiotics can cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics and can lead to allergies. Do not use these without medical advice. In case of doubt about any of the points above, please contact your tattoo artist and ask for further explanations.
  • What signs should I look for to indicate normal healing?
Moisture (from clear or pink liquid mixed with tattoo ink) is a normal occurrence during the first few days. Redness within the tattooed area. Slight swelling is normal for the first few hours to days, but should decrease with each passing day. Fever or chills may occur within the first 12 - 24 hours after tattooing; if it persists or becomes severe, it should be seen as a sign of infection and immediate medical attention is required. In case of doubt about any of the points above, please contact your tattoo artist and ask for further explanations.
  • Do I have an infection? Is my tattoo infected?
Increasing fluid secretion; Discharge of yellowish or green sticky liquid; An unpleasant odor; Increasing painful redness that spreads around the tattooed area; Increasing knocking and burning in and around the tattooed area; Immobility or difficulty moving a limb, finger, toe, or other body part; Red lines that spread across the skin; for example, red lines that run from a recent tattoo on the wrist or hand and continue down the forearm and up to the upper arm. This may be related to blood poisoning. If found, immediate medical attention should be sought; High fever or persistent fever and flu-like symptoms are signs of serious infection. If found, immediate medical attention should be sought. How to deal with an infection? Consult your doctor or a local health professional. The tattoo artist should also be notified.
  • Am I showing signs of allergie?
People, especially people with a pre-existing contact allergy to certain substances (e.g. nickel, preservatives, antiseptics and lanolin), may experience an allergic reaction to the tattooed area and surrounding area that sometimes spreads throughout the body. An allergic reaction can occur within hours, weeks, months or years of tattooing and may manifest as a skin rash with redness and itching, sometimes blisters, and the exudate is clear. In case of doubt about any of the points above, please contact your tattoo artist and ask for further explanations. How to deal with an allergic reaction occurs in the first days after treatment ? In case of an allergic reaction in the first days, we advise to stop using all products and to consult a doctor. An allergic reaction is difficult to treat and requires expert advice. The tattoo artist should also be notified. In case of an allergic reaction in the first days, we advise to stop using all products and to consult a doctor.
